Race Report – Clubrooms- Gilmour Giddy
Thursday 19th July 2007

Running the Gilmour Giddy 4.98km course was the first, as part of the winter series this year. This run is traditional run on the Christmas break-up and it is a course not too many runners like. This course has also proved to cause a few accidents, and Thursday night was no exception. One runner apparently got lost and another had a fall and couldn’t finish the run.

But under beautiful skies and no wind, 55 runners and 5 walkers turned up to battle another Championships point’s race. A new face, Nathan Dennis took out line honours scoring maximum points based on his handicap. He ran 20.05, followed by Ian Heafield (23.58) and in third place was Claire Issell (23.09). In fourth place was Rick Mann (23.12) and in fifth was Matt Wendall (23.24). The Championship leader board is starting to look quite interesting now. Jenny Northe is still on top with 786, followed by Paula Lucas closing in with 784, and then follows Mick Bridle on 753. Brad Bourne on 745 and slipping down to fifth is Steve McLeod on 728.
(Please remember that despite the points being close, out of the 16 Championship races, the handicapper will work out the individual runner’s fastest 10 races based on his/her handicap to find the eventual winner)
Fastest runner was the ever improving John MacKenzie, who ran 18.22;   followed closely behind by Shane Pettingill 18.26, and third fastest was Darrel Cross, who ran 18.46. Times seem quite conservative, and this could be due to the fact that these men were running the 12km AV Cross Country at Bundoora on the Saturday. Kathryn Ewels, recorded the fastest women’s time and ran 19.05, followed by Melissa Jones (20.09) and in third was Deb Piercy (20.32). Melissa ran a fantastic time and is beginning to give others a run for their money. She was quite chuffed to beat one of her nemesis, Rob Embleton. Apparently he was quietly confident that she wasn’t going to beat him. Deb and Sandra Timmer-Arends had a good battle for third place and hopefully they, along with Karen Ashton can take out the 40+ relay team at Sandown next Saturday.
We welcome Lynda McRae and Karen Tsebelis as new runners to the club.
Walkers were Rebecca Robjant, Carol Summersgill, Margaret Salisbury, Bill and Gillian Vander Brand.
