Race Report – FLINDERS PRIMARY SCHOOL
Thursday 28th June 2007
After the flash floods on Wednesday, it was a relief to see the rain easing, making the Thursday night run at Flinders a little more enjoyable. 47 runners and 6 walkers competed in the 5.930km Championship race at Flinders Primary School that consisted of 2 laps with a tough hill to make it even more challenging.
This week’s Championship race saw Rachel Nuttall (32.14) take out the maximum points. 8 seconds behind on handicap was Jason Mulvogue (25.22), followed by Brad Bourne (26.31) who was a further 9 seconds behind. Leading the Championships tally board is still Jenny Northe (714), followed by Steve McLeod (637) who is now making his move up the leader board and coming third now is Todd Houghton (626). Paula is coming fourth (621), and in fifth is Brad Bourne (602).
The fastest on the night was Darrel Cross who ran 20.07. He has obviously recovered from his great performance in the marathon and has set his sights on having a crack at the remainder of the AV races. Second fastest was Shane Pettingill (22.31) who also seems to have recovered from his marathon debut and is certainly looking forward to running a few more. Third fastest was Murray Brady (23.46). Kathryn Ewels continues her superb form and again dominates the women’s race by recording a time of 23.17. In second place was Melissa Jones (25.26) who is starting to improve her times as a result of her consistent performances so far during the AV season. Running in third was Deb Piercy (25.36) who is in her final preparations for the Goldcoast marathon.
We welcome another 3 new runners: Matt Weddell, Rob Preston and Sebastian Pinel. It is great to see new face especially during the winter months.
Walkers were Rebecca Rosack, Bill and Gillian Vander Brand, Trevor Renolds, Margaret Salisbury and Carol Summersgill.
Just a gentle reminder to all runners, that if you are running sub 5 minute km pace that you need to start at 6.00pm. The purpose for running early is for the slower runners to finish among the main group. If you have to run early, just don’t cross the line. Those who are doing duty can run in the first group as long as they work it out with their duty group. Please try to adhere to this reminder, as it makes it difficult for the handicapper to know who ran in which group and adjusting the right handicaps accordingly.
Just a note on how the handicapper is working out the points and your handicap. Your handicap is added to your finishing time to give you a handicap time. The person with the fastest handicap time receives 100 points and everyone in order gets one point less. The handicaps are then altered; the first 10% of the field (usually 5 people) are then re-handicapped by adding enough time to their handicap to bring them back to the average handicap time. New runners are given the hardest handicap time which is 16 minutes which will place them last for the first week generally. They are then re-handicapped next time round.
