Sun 29th Mar 2009 Ray and Dorris Ellis 16km
A glorious autumn day made for great running conditions for this years event. For those looking at the Traralgon half or full Marathon in three months time this is an ideal event to compliment your training. There are not many 16km events around and when you add hills it really test your fitness and endurance not to mention your mental toughness. That is why we chose this event to honour Ray and Doris Ellis both tough and courageous competitors. Their efforts recently to complete the Tru-Energy fun run and our Community fun run to aid the GERF shows just how tough and determined they are.
17 runners lined up for the 16km event with the McShane’s making the long trip from Bairnsdale adding a bit of class to the field. Steven McShane the under 18 Australian Mountain Running Champion in 2008 was always going to be hard to beat. Frank McShane would be tough opposition for Ben Bailey who made the trip up from Melbourne and Greg Semmler. Charlotte McShane now doing the pro circuit in tri athlons was going to make it tough for Anna Orr to win back to back titles. Steven McShane won the race outright with some close racing behind him seeing Frank McShane cross the line in front of Ben Bailey and Greg Semmler. Charlotte McShane set a new female race record to win from Anna Orr.
9 runners took on the 8km event with the Mullens family making up most of the field. Rob Semmler won the event but he was hard pushed by the talented Peta Mullens. Peta hasn’t raced for about 5 years since embarking on a successful bike riding career that saw her hold a world junior record. In that time she hasn’t lost her friendly smile or her running talent.
