COLIBAN RELAY – 28th June
On Saturday 21 Harriers travelled up To Bendigo for round 5 of the XCR 08 series, the Coliban Ekiden Relays. The morning got off to a slow start with new comer Simon Maselli being late for the bus. Luckily due to Bruce’s fantastic driving skills we made it to Harcourt with 15 mins to spare. Everyone was already organised into their teams and running orders so all we had to do was make sure everyone got on the bus to make it to their correct changeover in time. The first runners to leave was the mens Div 2 team, with club captain Shane Pettingill running the first leg of 5.5km. This was a challenging leg with a gradual incline the whole way and a total rise of 132m. 15 mins later the Womens Div 2 team and Mens div 7 (mixed team) left, with Sue Elsdon and Paula Pettingill running the first legs for these 2 teams. Last team to start was our Mens Div 5 team, bus driver Bruce Salisbury ran this first leg so he could run back and get the bus. The 2 leg was run by Greg Semmler (Mens Div 2), Anna Orr (Womens Div 2), Carmel Quirk (Mens Div 7) and Simon Maselli (Mens Div 5). This leg was 6.0km and had a couple of crazy hills, on e at the start and one towards the end. The 3rd leg sounded like it was definitely the hardest leg, it was 8.4km and included rocky tracks, some very steep uphills and downhills with the last few kms heading down the road to the 3rd changeover. The brave runners who ran this leg were Brett Van der Velden (Mens Div 2) who ran very well picking up a few runners and bringing the team into 3rd place at the changeover. Kath Hilder ran very well for the Womens Div 2 team also piking up a few places, and Lauren Isles (Mens Div 7) and Duncan Orr (Mens Div 5) both ran very well. The Mens Div 2 then had their extra leg of 10km which was run by John Mackenzie. John put in a great effort but said he felt a bit flat from the Traralgon marathon only 2 weeks ago. The 10km was an out and back course and was very undulating the whole way. John then passed onto Chris Joustra who ran the 4th leg, a 7.9km course which included a mixture of dirt and sealed roads and was also an undulating course. Melissa Jones took over from Kat in the womens Div 2 and passed another team to bring the team into 5th. Matt Franke ran for the mens Div 5 team and Mick Beeck for the Mens Div 7. Both guys put in a solid run which brought them to the last changeover for the final leg of 5.1km which went along the Mandurang road and to the Bendigo athletics track for ¾ of a lap to finish the race. Darrel Cross finished it off for the Mens Div 2 running very well with the team finishing 5th in a very strong field. This was probably one of the best mens teams for many years and it was great to see them finish so well in a tough field. Kahlee Galea ran the last leg for the Womens Div 2 team and ran extremely well to maintain 5th place and continue their good season so far. Daniel Sinclair backed up after being sick a few days ealier to finish it off for the Mens Div 5 team and John Jervis made his return to the AV season finishing the race for the Mens Div 7 team. The trip home was very enjoyable, giving team members an opportunity to chat about their runs, get to know each other and have a bit of a laugh. A big thanks goes out to Bruce Salisbury who drove the bus for the team.
